What happens when classic storytelling, disciplined technique, and faith intersect? In the latest episode of the Ripples of Hope Podcast, Rhythm of Hope sits down with guest Kati Ansell, founder of East London's Christian Dance Academy and Dayspring Dance Company.

Together, they dive deep into the heart of Christian dance, God's perfect timing, and the story behind their upcoming collaborative production, Fly, Eagle, Fly!

    1. Balancing discipline with grace

Running a dance studio for nearly 25 years requires immense dedication. Classical ballet is notorious for its strict rules, rigorous structure, and high demands. However, as Kati explains, dance can build character, or it can be destructive if managed without heart.

"It's a constant balance between not living under the law, but using the law as guidance while living under the grace of God." Kati Ansell

By teaching dance as a medium to serve a higher purpose, studio environments transform from high-pressure spaces into places of spiritual growth, mentorship, and encouragement.

    2. Faith in God's timing and mentorship

When the global pandemic disrupted life and art worldwide, many planned collaborations fell through. Yet delay is not denial.

A testament to this was the journey of Ayanda, a bursary student whose post-matric pathway opened up through an internship at Kati's studio.

    • Character building: Working together allowed both mentor and intern to navigate fresh roles with gentleness and patience.
    • Bearing fruit: Ayanda's natural teaching talent quickly became evident, reflecting the long-term impact of investing in young, gifted dancers.

    3. The origins of Fly, Eagle, Fly!

The upcoming production carries a rich heritage rooted in South Africa.

    • The setting: Set in the rural beauty of the Transkei, the story stems from a classic African fable popularized by missionary James Aggrey and later adapted into a book by Christopher Gregorowski.
    • The narrative: A young eagle chick gets lost and is raised among chickens on a farm. Believing it is just a chicken, it struggles with identity, torn between naysayers who tell it to stay grounded and encouraging voices urging it to soar.
    • The spiritual parallel: Guided by a visitor (a representation of the Holy Spirit), the eagle is taken to the mountain cliffs to witness the sunrise, finally realizing its true calling to fly.

    4. A calling for Christian creatives

Kati offers an inspiring message to artists, dancers, musicians, and creators across all mediums.

    • Uncover the truth in classic stories: You don't always have to rely on overtly religious scripts to convey deep spiritual truths.
    • Redemption resonates: Classics like Cinderella or traditional ballets hold core themes of redemption, something every human heart instinctively responds to.
    • Be patient with the process: Purpose takes time to mature. Rather than expecting immediate, artificial perfection, allow vision and skill to grow organically.

"Be bold. If you don't know where to start, start with the story you know and ask God for His truth in it."
